When she speaks, He listens
In this second part of “Mary’s Retreat,” Fr. Gaitley reflects on Mary’s deep intercessory role and her powerful words at the Wedding at Cana: “Do whatever He tells you.” This command — her only recorded directive in Scripture — sums up the heart of her mission: to draw us into perfect obedience to Jesus.
Fr. Gaitley explains that Mary isn’t just a passive bystander in our spiritual lives; she’s a mother with authority. Because Jesus freely submitted Himself to her care, and because of her intimate union with His will, she has a unique right to intercede for us. When she speaks to Jesus on our behalf, He listens — not out of obligation, but out of love and divine design.
The scene at Cana reveals this dynamic beautifully. Even though Jesus initially resists her request, Mary doesn't argue — she simply trusts and instructs the servants: “Do whatever He tells you.” And through her intercession, His first miracle takes place.
When we consecrate ourselves to Mary, we’re not bypassing Jesus — we’re allowing His most faithful disciple to lead us straight to Him. She knows His heart and she knows ours. And because she is our mother, she has the freedom to bring our needs to Him, often before we even recognize them.
Today’s invitation is to renew our trust in Mary’s intercession. Give her permission to speak for you — and to teach you how to follow her own advice: “Do whatever He tells you.”
